The foundation of any successful heritage site is in the conservation and preservation of its physical remains. The Garrison area represents the most complete and authentic 18th & 19th century British Garrison anywhere in the World; making the need for conservation paramount.
The Garrison Consortium acknowledges the 1964 Venice Charter as its principle guide in the preservation and conservation of the area as well as in consideration of any development proposal. We also pay particular attention to the criteria under which UNESCO inscribed ‘Historic Bridgetown & its Garrison’ on the Wold Heritage List in 2011. Since 2014, we have been a member of the local ‘Barbados World Heritage Committee’, set up by the Government of Barbados to monitor and address issues within the designated site.
